Aycliffe Fell Walkers
Following on from a very muddy and exhausting February walk in the Upper Eden Valley, AFWC’s March walk from Shap to Pooley Bridge rewarded the walkers with excellent conditions for walking. It was dry underfoot and no rain to upset these ambitious walkers despite the bitterly cold weather. Many walkers strode out from Shap to take a 14-mile route via Shap Abbey, Bampton and Askham Fell whilst others started from Hackthorpe on a more leisurely westward stroll across to Pooley Bridge. Most walkers diverted to Lowther Castle near Askham to view the splendid architecture and grounds. The walk from the beautiful village of Askham up to Askham Fell involved a long and quite arduous ascent which rewarded walkers with some wonderful views on their way down to the hospitality of the Pooley Bridge alehouses. The social element of these AFWC outings is just as important as the scenic views from the hillwalking. The next outing is on Saturday 13th April and takes AFWC south to the Kirklees Way ending up in Holmfirth.
